📮 What is India Post DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is India's national geo-coded addressing infrastructure developed by the Department of Posts (Ministry of Communications, Government of India) in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) / ISRO.

Unlike traditional PIN codes that cover entire postal delivery zones, DIGIPIN divides the entire territorial extent of India into a hierarchical grid of precision units measuring approximately ~3.8 meters by ~3.8 meters (Level 10 resolution), assigning each unit an intuitive, alphanumeric 10-character digital address code.

⚡ Key Features & Technical Specifications

🎯 3.8m Pinpoint Accuracy

Level 10 recursive matrix pinpointing exact building entrances, doorways, and rural points.

🔤 16-Character Alphabet

Uses only 16 unambiguous symbols (2-9, C, F, J, K, L, M, P, T) preventing spelling or transcription confusion.

📡 100% Offline Encoding

Mathematical algorithm executes offline without requiring proprietary APIs or internet connection.

🚑 Emergency & Logistics

Provides unambiguous coordinates for ambulance dispatch, disaster rescue, e-commerce, and postal mail.

🇮🇳 All-India Coverage

Comprehensive geographic bounding box from Latitude 2.5°N–38.5°N and Longitude 63.5°E–99.5°E.

🔒 Privacy & Standardization

Public digital public good (DPG) addressing infrastructure open for all Indian citizens and businesses.

📐 How Does the DIGIPIN Grid System Work?

DIGIPIN divides India's continental and island landmass into a 4x4 recursive grid hierarchy. At each level (from Level 1 to Level 10), each cell is subdivided into 16 sub-cells:

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is DIGIPIN different from traditional 6-digit PIN codes? ▼

A traditional 6-digit PIN code represents an entire post office jurisdiction that can span tens of square kilometers. A 10-character DIGIPIN pinpoints an exact ~3.8m x 3.8m grid unit anywhere in India.

Can I use DIGIPIN without an active internet connection? ▼

Yes! DIGIPIN is a pure mathematical geo-coding algorithm. With GPS enabled on your device, your DIGIPIN can be generated and resolved completely offline.

Who created DIGIPIN? ▼

DIGIPIN was developed by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, in technical partnership with Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) and ISRO / NRSC.
